Gig worker

Gig workers could be people who use an app to get work, and may also be called independent contractor, regulated worker, or employee-like worker.

Everyone working in Australia has the right to fair and safe work. It is important to understand your work rights, signs of unfair and unsafe work, and where to go for advice and support.
Gig workers have unique entitlements and protections. Information on some of these are listed below:
Signs of poor working conditions include:
  • Not being paid the right amount
  • Long working hours or the expectation to be available all of the time
  • Discrimination, bullying, or sexual harassment, or any unfair treatment towards you
  • Not being told about how to stay safe in the job
  • Not being provided with access to support if there is a workplace issue
  • Pressured to work when tired
  • Pressured to work when personal safety is at risk

Signs that it may be modern slavery include:
  • Violence, threats, or harm towards you or your family
  • Being made to pay off a large debt as part of the job
  • Not being paid
  • Excessive overtime and often without a meal or rest breaks
  • Visa or important documents being taken and kept so that there is no access to them
  • Being prevented from seeing a doctor or medical professional when unwell
