The situation in Port Vila is still unfolding, with initial reports indicating significant damage to infrastructure, homes, and essential services. This is a stark reminder of the increasing frequency and severity of disasters faced by communities globally and why Australian Red Cross works both locally and internationally to ensure communities are supported to prepare for and respond to emergencies.
Australian Red Cross is working closely with Vanuatu Red Cross Society (VRCS) and the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC), who are monitoring the situation and exploring response options. The VRCS has local Emergency Response Teams on the ground, trained, equipped and ready to assist affected communities with pre-positioned relief items.
We are committed to ensuring that local teams are well-prepared and supported to act as first responders as we know the strength of our humanitarian work lies in empowering local communities.
Australian Red Cross will continue to monitor the situation closely alongside our Movement partners and stands ready to support as, and when required.
