Today Australian Red Cross has officially opened the doors to its new office in Southport, celebrating more than 85 years supporting the Gold Coast community.
Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young AC PSM, Governor of Queensland joined Australian Red Cross Queensland State Director, Garry Page at an official building dedication ceremony at the new location, 1 Mick Vievers Way, Southport.
Australian Red Cross Queensland State Director, Garry Page said the occasion provided an opportunity to reflect the organisations strong community ties whilst also calling for the next generation of local residents to get involved in volunteering for Australian Red Cross.
“In 1939, the rumblings of the Second World War spurred a group of women from in and around Southport to gather together and form the Southport Branch of the Queensland Red Cross Society.
“Since then, the branch has provided significant support across the Gold Coast, being the only Branch for 26 miles for 34 years between 1939 and 1973, offering services such as hospital visiting, community assistance, fundraising, reading groups, Hands on Care, the thrift shop, merchandise, disaster preparedness and first aid.
This new office symbolises a continuation of our presence in the Southport community where we will continue vital services like the Telecross phone call program, Medical Equipment Hire Service, Trauma Teddies, and our fundraising initiatives will thrive.”
Mr Page is calling for Southport locals to come and join the Branch membership in voluntary roles, including volunteers for Medical Equipment Hire Service roles, Telecross and Telechat, and Emergency Services.
“It’s our dedicated volunteers and members who make the critical work of Australian Red Cross possible,” Mr Page said.
“The benefits go both ways, with volunteers often talking about how rewarding their work is, the friendships they make, and the countless new experiences and skills they gain.
“If you’ve ever thought about volunteering, I urge you to reach out and have a chat about the opportunities in the Southport area.”
The public is invited to attend the Southport office to access medical equipment hire services, find out more about the work of Australian Red Cross, or opportunities to volunteer.
