The warmth of friendship can mean the world to people.
Across Australia, more than 1,000 older people have been paired with a volunteer to provide friendship and support. It’s just one way we ensure older people remain connected to their community and stay well and independent*.
In a time of a global pandemic, genuine and beautiful friendships have become increasingly rare, with close to half of all Australians regularly feeling lonely.
Your support can ensure that older people make valuable social connections with our friendly volunteers, ensuring they aren’t alone.
*Services are available in ACT, NSW, TAS, VIC and WA.
Despite their age gap running in to the decades, Val and Allie have a timeless friendship that radiates warmth, kindness, and love. At more than 90 years old, and with no family nearby, Val is keen to meet people, get out, and make new friends, despite living in a nursing home. She met Allie, a volunteer, through Red Cross.
While most Red Cross volunteers see their buddies once a fortnight, Val and Allie are on the phone every day. “We ring each other up, and it’s great, we catch up on what we’ve been doing, and it makes life so interesting,” said Val. Val and Allie go out, have lunches, and simply have a good time together. This means the world to Val, who’s lived a life dedicated to caring for people, as a nurse, and has travelled the world.
For Allie, she believes one of the greatest gifts people can bring to those that may feel lonely is empathy. “I care about Val so much that it makes me feel happy that she knows someone loves her and will take care of her the best way I can,” says Allie.
