Organise a street get-together

Knowing your neighbours can help in so many ways – from increased safety and help in emergencies, to creating new connections and friends. Holding a regular street get-together is a great way to make your street really feel like home and with a few like minded neighbours, it’s easy to get started.

Steps to take action

1. Talk with the neighbours that you already know about your idea to organise a street get-together and plan it together.
2. Find out if there are Council regulations. If you’re not closing the street or selling food or alcohol, you usually won’t need a permit.
3. Decide on the:
   • Date and time – when are most people at home.
   • Theme – Christmas, Springtime, Winter soup.
   • Food and drink – usually people are happy to bring a plate of food to share and their own drinks.
   • Location – is there a wide nature strip or a quieter part of your street that people can safely gather.
   • Equipment – a few tables and maybe a shade tent is all that’s needed. People can BYO chairs.
4. Design an invitation (Canva online has free templates), or a handwritten note works well too. Set up a street Facebook group.
5. 2 weeks before your event you can letterbox drop your invitations and put posters on telegraph posts along your street.
6. Put up decorations the day before or morning of the get together to help remind your neighbours about the event.
7. Get together and celebrate!
