The Global Emergency Fund allows Australian Red Cross to respond flexibly to urgent and often underreported crises around the world, by supporting trusted Red Cross and Red Crescent teams already working alongside affected communities.
Your support helps provide healthcare, safe water, shelter, emergency relief and other essential humanitarian assistance – while helping people recover with dignity.
Years of violence and instability in Myanmar have forced millions of people to flee their homes, with many seeking safety in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. Today, more than 1.1 million displaced people continue living in overcrowded camps, where access to safe shelter, healthcare, clean water and other essential services remain limited.
Families continue to face ongoing risks from floods, cyclones and fires, while many remain reliant on humanitarian assistance after years of displacement.
In response to the crisis, Australian Red Cross launched the Bangladesh-Myanmar Appeal in 2017. Together, with the generosity of supporters, the appeal helped raise more than $1.5 million to support people affected by conflict, displacement and humanitarian crisis.
As the situation has become a protracted humanitarian crisis, the dedicated Bangladesh-Myanmar Appeal has now closed, with support for communities affected by conflict, displacement and disasters continuing through the Global Emergency Fund.
Communities in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo are facing a rapidly spreading Ebola outbreak in areas already impacted by conflict, displacement and weakened healthcare systems.
As of late May 2026, hundreds of suspected cases and significant loss of life have already been reported, including three Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Red Cross volunteers who lost their lives while carrying out their duties. Ongoing population movement and limited healthcare access continue to increase the risk of further spread across neighbouring countries.
Hundreds of Red Cross volunteers have already been deployed to support communities through risk communication, awareness activities and safe response efforts designed to help contain the outbreak and protect lives.
Australian Red Cross delegates are ready to support response efforts in DRC, and our Restoring Family Links service is available for people in Australia who have lost contact with family members and loved ones affected by the crisis.
Sudan is experiencing one of the world’s most severe humanitarian emergencies. Now in its third year, ongoing conflict continues to devastate communities, displacing millions of people and leaving families without access to food, healthcare, clean water and safety.
More than 30 million people urgently need humanitarian assistance, while essential services and healthcare systems continue to collapse in many conflict-affected areas.
Sudanese Red Crescent volunteers continue working in extremely challenging conditions to support affected communities, evacuate the injured, distribute aid and help reconnect families separated by conflict.
Donations to the Global Emergency Fund mean Red Cross can be there for people in disasters, crises and conflicts overseas. It powers local emergency teams to provide life-saving assistance during disasters and conflict, and helps communities recover with dignity and prepare for future crises.
Your donations support life-changing work, and may include:
Our local emergency teams are experts in their field and based in communities. Many of them have lived through emergencies themselves. With your support, we can continue making sure that Australian Red Cross can show solidarity and provide additional support, helping people through the most challenging moments of their lives.
At least 80 per cent of money raised goes directly to the purposes of this fund. No more than 20 cents in every dollar is spent on support costs so we can run Australian Red Cross efficiently and effectively.
These support costs include investments associated with the overall operational capacity of Australian Red Cross, such as:
Yes, donations of gifts over $2 are tax deductible in Australia. If you receive a material benefit for your donation then it is not tax deductible: for example, if you receive points or another material benefit from your credit card provider.
You will receive a receipt in your name.
In the unlikely event that funds raised exceed the cost of our emergency services work, the excess will be used to support our everyday work with other people experiencing vulnerability and communities across the world who are in need.
Australian Red Cross takes your privacy seriously and handles your personal information in accordance with our Privacy Collection Notice and Privacy Policy. If you do not want to receive marketing materials from us, you can email contactus@redcross.org.au or call 1800 RED CROSS (733 276).
We really appreciate the generosity, but we are not accepting in-kind donations for food, clothes, medical equipment or other items, as we’re unable to distribute those overseas. There are several good reasons for this. Every item has to be checked, cleaned, sorted, packed, transported, stored and distributed, which hugely increases the cost of the relief effort and diverts from work that may be needed on the ground.
Also, the items donated aren’t always what people need. But cash helps people make dignified choices that are right for them. Even worse, unwanted boxes of donated goods can clog ports and post offices and actually prevent the delivery of essential items like medicines and relief supplies.
Read more about what might happen when goods are donated after an emergency: Donating clothes or goods after an emergency.
If you have good-quality clothes or household items, our Red Cross Shops would gratefully accept them, to on-sell in Australia and raise funds for our vital work. Find out how you can donate.
