Red Cross Executive Director Tasmania, Ian Burke, said in the past 24 hours more than 2,500 people have donated to the Red Cross Tasmanian Bushfires 2013 Appeal, with donations totalling around $350,000.

"Australians have been quick to respond to this disaster. We greatly appreciate this generosity but more funds will be needed to help the hundreds of people who have lost homes and possessions in the fires," said Mr Burke.

"The scenes on the Tasman Peninsula are truly devastating. These communities face some major challenges and they will need significant long-term support in their recovery."

Red Cross has launched the Tasmanian Bushfires 2013 Appeal at the invitation of the Tasmanian Government in order to provide assistance to people impacted by the bushfires. The funds raised in the Appeal will be used to assist individuals, families and communities directly affected by the January 2013 Tasmanian bushfires.

While fire fighters continue to work towards bringing fires under control in Tasmania, many parts of Australia face high risk fire and heat conditions in coming days.

Red Cross is calling on Australians to take care in the hot conditions, which can be deadly. Everyone should take the risks of heat seriously and undertake steps to ensure their safety and that of their families, friends and neighbours. Elderly people, children and those with existing medical conditions are particularly vulnerable to the effects of heat.
